The Hospital Laboratory has two sections namely: the main laboratory and the Automated Operational research Laboratory which was constructed under the funding of catholic Relief services (CRS). The department is well staffed with nine Professionals (3 senior Laboratory Technicians, 3 Laboratory Assistants and 3 Senior microscopists). The Team is well trained to meet the set standards of Technical Competence, Effectiveness, Interpersonal relations, Efficiency, Continuity and safety.
Functionally, Virika Hospital is a referral unit and the laboratory plays an integrative role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of opportunistic and tropical diseases. For this reason, it has been recognized and credited by Ministry of Health-Uganda and World Health Organization (WHO). The accreditation was based on personnel, Quality Assurance Program, Validation protocol, Infrastructure, Laboratory Equipment and its care, standard operating procedures and recording of test results. These are key elements of good Laboratory practice which guarantee reliability, integrity of our laboratory tests, reporting and traceability of data.

Structurally, the laboratory has two departments (the main laboratory and peripheral operational research laboratory). Functionary services offered are sectioned in to Haematology, parasitology, micro-Biology, Bio-chemistry and Blood transfusion.
Services offered are Extensive and comprehensive ranging from Reproductive Health, maternity-child Health, HIV care, opportunistic and tropical diseases to community and Environmental health. These services are listed below:
1. Providing quality and competent diagnostic services in Rwenzori region and Uganda at large. The Functional classification of services offered include;

i. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
ii. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate ( ESR)
iii. Haemoglobin measurement
iv. Sickling Test
v. Clotting profile
vi. Film comment
vii. Reticulocyte count
viii. Other Haemoglobinopathic Tests
i Stool Analysis
ii. Urinalysis
iii. Malaria Tests
iv. Wet preparation and concentration Techniques for detection of other haemo parasites
v. Feacal occult Blood
vi. Urine occult Blood
vii. Other Immuno- chromatographic Tests
Blood Transfusion
i. Blood grouping
ii. Cross matching
iii. Post transfusion reaction tests
• Renal functional Tests (RFT’s)
• Liver functional Tests (LFT’s)
• Pancreatic Tests ( Endocrine and exocrine)
• Cardiac markers
• Lipid profile
• Immuno- chemistry Tests e.g CD4 Tests
• Fertility tests and others
i. Procedures carried out to detect the presence of Bacteria, Viruses and mycoses. These are:
ii. Examination of secretion (sputum, CSF, semen, swabs and effusions
iii. Staining procedures ( fluorescence, gram and others).
iv Serological tests (immuno chromatographic tests, reagent test and others).
v. Mycotic tests
vi. Other tests related to HIV and other opportunistic diseases.
2. The laboratory also engages in operational research activities such as establishing specifity and sensitivity of tests.
3. Training of junior staff and the department wards students who meet the set standards.
4. Participation in primary health activities such as out reach HIV testing and sensitization programs.
5. Participation in external and internal quality control programs.
6. Finally, the laboratory spear heads the infection control committee of the hospital to combat any out breaks ( Epidemics).
